Town The conditions of the local microclimate owe much to the city’s favoured location in the Szczawik valley with well-forested hills surrounding the spa. The streams of Szczawno are among the oldest in Europe and comparable to those of Switzerland. Archeological finds indicate that mineral streams have been known here for about 2000 years. The first person to test the water from these streams, thereby confirming its healing properties, was the Hochberg royal physician, Casper Schwenckfeldt, in 1598. Famous people who have visited Szczawno for medical treatment include the king of Saxony, Emperor Wilhelm II, King Constantine of Greece, Ttsar Nicolas I, Winston Churchill, and Agostino Casaroli. Visitors can also enjoy the use of tennis courts, horse-riding, bike routes, interesting coach trips to Cracow, concerts in the neo-rococo Spa Theatre and walking in the two historical nature reserves.
