Respiratory system and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat)

Conditions of the nose, throat, paranasal sinuses, bronchi and lungs, and chronic colds.

A treatment schedule is devised by consultation with an experienced physician on an individual basis for each patient at the beginning of their stay. Treatment of respiratory system conditions involving various inhalations and balneotherapy procedures.

Inhalations involve the use of various preparations - their composition depends on the type of condition being treated. Among the most common used are aerosols containing sodium and chloride ions and aerosols with pharmaceutical agents. The fluid is atomised by ultrasonic waves generated in the inhalation device; the aerosol mist obtained is then inhaled. Inhalation acts on the mucous membrane and smooth muscles of the respiratory tract, and molecules of a pharmaceutical agent are transported directly to the affected tissues. Depending on the agents used, inhalation may treat spasms or inflammation, or dissolve dried or thick bronchial secretion.

Balneotherapy procedures may produce a range of therapeutic effects, depending on the type of mineral water used and content of biologically active compounds. Minerals easily penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the body; they also permeate the body with the air inhaled during such baths. Toxins and other harmful compounds resulting in or from disease are at the same time eliminated by the water. Specific chemical compounds contained in the water enhance beneficial biochemical process at tissue level, protect cells from damage caused by inflammation, reduce the tendency for blood clotting, prevent damage to blood vessel walls, reduce blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol, and normalise blood pressure. They also relieve pain, both directly and indirectly. Carbonic acid bath is highly effective in the treatment of respiratory conditions, as it increases efficiency of the respiratory system.

A bath with pine needles and added ethereal oils, which during evaporation are absorbed by the respiratory system making breathing easier and the coughing up secretions in cases of chronic inflammation of respiratory pathways.

Terapuls (pulse diathermy) procedures subject the body to high-frequency vibrating magnetic fields extremely useful in the treatment of inflammatory conditions. Moreover, the procedure removes swelling, relieves pain and stimulates the absorption of haematomas.

In the treatment of paranasal sinus inflammation, a highly efficient Sollux (IR) lamp is used. Irradiation by the Sollux lamp relieves chronic inflammatory conditions and past traumatic lesions. During irradiation by infrared light, the energy of radiation absorbed by tissues increases the kinetic energy of their molecules, resulting in the increased metabolism of skin receptors and elevation of pain thresholds.

The quality of the air at Spa locations is an important therapeutic factor that ought to be taken into consideration. The air is saturated with biological compounds that originate from the surrounding forests. The air derives great therapeutic properties also from its characteristic humidity, high content of microelements and lack of pollution.

The treatment is complemented by drinking mineral water, whose chemical composition supports the regeneration processes.

There are also many other treatments available.
